Dates

Burns bog (Delta) and Vancouver landfill
Full day
District: all

Burns Bog is unique – it is the last one of its kind in the Lower Mainland and is the largest domed peat bog on the west coast of North America. It is also hosts the Vancouver Landfill. Despite all of the dramatic changes caused by non-native (invasive) species introduction, altered hydrology, and habitat loss from human disturbance, this unique ecosystem still provides habitats, breeding grounds, and sources of food for a wide variety of flora and fauna, including 24 species of mammal and 150 bird species. Students will learn about and complete activities on the historical background of the Bog and use by First Nations groups; the habitats and communities that make the Bog unique; and the effects of human disturbance, invasive species, and other potential threats to the Bog environment. Students are encouraged to use all five senses, make predictions, and come up with solutions to potential threats to Burns Bog.

Note: All half day tours include a tour to one of the locations listed above
