Suggested for Grade 9 (Electricity and Conservation)
Geography 12 (Resources and Environmental Sustainability)
We spend 90% of our time indoors, so the quality of the buildings and the sources heating it matter. Vancouver is internationally renowned for their innovative approaches to sustainable buildings. Students will have a unique look at how architects and planners incorporate passive design and alternative energy uses to lower the demand we place on external mechanisms.
What they'll learn:
Tours will cover the five main aspects of sustainable buildings - energy, materials, water, site placement, and social space – and present additional economic reasons for green buildings. Students will also learn about green building classification systems. Emphasis will be placed on what students and their families can do in their existing homes, schools, and social spaces to live with a lighter impact on the Earth. Most tours last a half-day in length to accommodate high school class schedules
